Giant Sequoia National Monument Begins Management Revision Process

February 6, 2008 – The Sequoia National Forest has published a notice of intent to prepare a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Giant Sequoia National Monument Management Plan to address objects of interest cited in the Presidential Proclamation that created the Monument.  The Monument is 327,769 acres and is located within Sequoia National Forest.  Among the objects of interest in the Proclamation that the Forest seeks to address is a transportation plan.  Though motor vehicle use is already limited to designated routes within the Monument, the draft EIS could impact those routes further.  The Forest estimates that the initial scoping phase of the management revision process will last up to a year.  During this phase, the Forest will hold scoping meetings and workshops.  When scoping events are scheduled, they can be accessed by clicking here

After a draft EIS is released, a 90-day formal comment period will begin.  Comments on the scope of the EIS may be submitted to:

Tina Terrell
Forest Supervisor
