Americans For Responsible Recreational Access.
The short explanation of this alert was:
Please write to your Representative urging opposition to a Tongass road ban. Your interest is very important because the House of Representatives may vote on this matter in the next couple of days.
Alaska’s entire congressional delegation strongly opposes any effort to block road building into this small area of Tongass. The people of Southeast Alaska need ARRA’s support.
ARRA’s interest is that access roads also provide a means for recreation interests to enjoy our national forests. Seldom does ARRA get involved in a timber harvest issue affecting a national forest. The Tongass National Forest issue is such that we cannot sit by quietly while the anti-access community launches an all out attack to prevent road building into this national forest.
The issue is whether the Forest Service can build additional roads to reach 676,000 acres of forest land, less than 4% of the entire Tongass National Forest, some 17,000,000 acres. Environmentalists opposed any timber harvest in Tongass, though the local communities of Southeast Alaska are in desperate need of a steady supply of timber in order shore up the local economy.
