NPS Finalizes Rules Governing Yellowstone & Grand Teton Winter Use

November 20, 2009 – The National Park Service has published Final Rules governing winter visitation and certain recreational use during the 2009-2010 and the 2010-2011 seasons in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway.  Under the Final Rules, which implement the Finding of No Significant Impact for the 2009 Winter Use Plans Environmental Assessment (2008 EA), 318 “best available technology” snowmobiles will be allowed on a daily basis in Yellowstone.  On Jackson Lake in Grand Teton, the number of snowmobiles is initially limited to 25 per day, which then may be adjusted upward or downward, not to exceed 40 per day.  25 snowmobiles per day will also be allowed on the Grassy Lake Road in the Parkway.  These Final Rules are effective on December 15, 2009.
